Cloud computing certainly became one of the most popular buzzwords in the last couple of years. But as it was the case with some vogue terms in computer science before, the Cloud also became one of the most misused terms in IT history. A lot of companies and even IT professionals simply replaced the old-fashioned word “Server” with the cool new vocable “Cloud”, whenever possible – well, actually also whenever impossible. So Cloud computing became a synonym for “It’s running on a server but I don’t know where”.
The basic concept of Augmented Reality (AR) typically ties data to the location of the user and the identified object; this is well known and established in many of today’s AR applications, but we believe that there is the necessity for an additional dimension when it comes to industrial AR. In an industrial use case, the set of data presented to the user of a mobile device should also reflect the situation of the environment the person is currently working in.
